CASE STATEMENT

The Church of the St. Francis Xavier, Hyannis has served the local villages of Barnstable for 105 years.  Our parish has a rich and historic past nurturing Catholics as they moved to the Cape and enriched the community. At present, our parish serves many long-time residents and newcomers. They are served by priests who understand their lifestyles, speak their languages and minister to their religious needs.  However, the parish facilities show the wear and tear of so many faithful parishioners who attend our two campuses year round, our resident snowbirds, as well as the tourists who visit from May through October.

Vitality in a parish with aging buildings causes some problems. The following areas and items have been identified as some of the physical needs of our parish at this time. Please take a moment to review this list and offer your opinions toward this project.


Main Church

•Roof: Replace the roof with 50 year asphalt shingles.
•Church Exterior: Before we beautify our Church Interior, we must care for the exterior of the   
        building.  Therefore, the building must be painted and rotted wood replaced.
•Church Interior: We must clean the air conditioning duct work, repair window and door frames,
        replace entrance carpeting and finally, paint.
•Church Parking Lot: We must repair areas that are unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians.


Sacred Heart Chapel

•Chapel Exterior: We must waterproof areas of the building to protect against further water damage.
        Afterwards, we will repaint the exterior trim.
•Chapel Interior: We must repair the window frames in the front and rear of the building.  We must
        also repair holes in the foundation.  Afterward, we will paint the interior.
•We must replace the current electrical system, from the street to the interior box.

Other Parish Needs

•357 South Street (Fr. Duffy Pastoral Center): We must install a new hot air furnace and replace the
        roof.
•81 High School Road: We must install a new hot air furnace, replace a section of the rotting deck,
        replace the windows, repair the exterior trim and replace the roof.
•Main Rectory: We must replace six first floor windows and do some minor painting.
•Parish Office: We must repair the exterior trim, repair the deck/handicapped entranceway, and
       install a new heating system and flue for the chimney.
•Sacred Heart Chapel House: Replace exiting roof, replace electrical service panel, replace rotted
        wood trim around several windows and paint exterior of building.


Parish Debt to the Diocese: We must begin to take responsibility for our parish’s debt to the Diocese of Fall River.  The large monthly payments we must make sap our yearly revenues and keep us from growing as a Parish.  We will take $600,000 of the monies raised and apply them to the reduction of our debt.


To provide a future as vibrant and exciting in the love of God, we need to solve these problems together now.
